I guess we've all been there at one time or another.  Since it's a 
friend/neighbor, how about a barter situation?  Even if it's just time for 
time lawn mowing or something.  Since you are thinking of doing it anyway, 
this gives the family the idea that it is not charity, just a trade of 
service.
