Tommy, just to be contrary, and to reject the sacred pronouncements of the big Kahuna (S&S) I"ll come down on the side of thin punchings. If sponginess is what they are worried about why not remove the felt punching that gives many times more sponginess than 50 thin paper punchings??

I'd be more apt to think that thick punchings may be cupped during their manufacture and hence take some time to flatten out during use. Thin ones however are flexible enough to settle in during the process of leveling and dipping the keyboard.

But if you think Steinway knows more about it than I do, what can I say? Check with Marcell Ledbetter, if you don't believe me.

Sounds to me like another platitude like the need for 1/16 inch crown in their keybed to add strength. Remember everything is for advertising purposes, not necessarily technically important.

I'm an equal opportunity criticizer and I'm sure Steinway has a thick skin. They do make a decent piano.
