Well. I found it.  It was a penny lying on the soundboard, under the toe of
the plate (not even an old valuable one :-)  ).  I held the cardboard tube
from a roll of paper towels to my ear and could focus much better.  I also
found a dirt dauber nest built around a necklace pendant and a wood screw,
but the dried mud seems to have kept them from vibrating..  Thanks for the
input.
