Gee, Bill, it's really hard to give you all the answers to a =
lifetime of piano work in one night, but what the heck.....

Yes, there are other things that should be done first, but only if =
you're serious about doing a complete regulation.=20
If the main complaint is "cheating jacks" as you describe them, then =
by all means get them back under the knuckles. Of course, that's going =
to be hard to do if the jacks are too high in the repetition =
window,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and then, If the keybed isn't bedded correctly, it =
could change that adjustment,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, But if the main complaint =
is cheating jacks and they're too far forward, and that's all you've =
been called upon to fix; then go ahead and adjust them. I personally =
think that this is one of the more important adjustments in an action =
regulation, but I personally never do it without making sure that the =
jacks are below the windows (five minutes) applying teflon powder (three =
minutes) and adjusting the spring tension (fifteen minutes), but after =
you change the relationship of the jacks to the knuckles, it will change =
the let-off,,,,,,,,,,,sheesh! Pretty soon, you've got a basic regulation =
going there buddy!

  Subject: Regulating Grand Jacks

  List,

Also on this 1973 Kimball Grand, I have the problem of jacks being out =
of alignment with the hammer knuckles (I think). When played hard, the =
hammers loose so much power that they do not even reach the strings. =
When played softly, they seem fine and the repetition is fine as well. =
Assuming that the jacks are not aligned with the knuckles once I pull =
out the action and look, is there any reason not to regulate the back =
edge of the jacks to the back edge of the wood core of the knuckles =
without first doing any other part of the regulation sequence?
