I think there's a misunderstanding here owing to Mike's omission of 
the units in his reply: -- "1/8 is a good starting point".

1/8 _inch_, being about 1/16th of the speaking length, is indeed 
probably about the mark -- something between 1/16th and 1/20th of the 
speaking length will probably turn out to be right.
