Patrick, Terry Threaded inserts would be almost the same as threading a heavy lag screw into hardwood. Something you might try on a scrap of maple or oak is to make a "tap" out of a lag screw by grinding a notch in the tip just like the notch in self drilling wood screws. Cut your threads into the wood first, then insert your leg fastener. Works well!
