Ron seems to have gone to bed, so maybe I can help. That's a laminated
soundboard panel, and as such, is pretty stiff. What you're seeing is a
channel routed part way through the panel to add flexibility for bass
response. It's the functional equivalent of tapering or "diaphragmming" the
panel. Standard tapering or diaphragmming would go through layers somewhere
out toward the center of a laminated panel and probably look pretty nasty,
so Ron kept all the layer cutting close to the rim.

I also see acorn nuts on the plate perimeter bolts. Would that be the
wonderful shop made, adjust from above, "Easy Riser" plate hangers we've
talked about on the list?
