Dave In our plate work I have come to like the string no.s painted on with sign painters enamel which is what we hand letter the embossing as well. I've used the small decal for the string no.s ,which I like but they are a nuisance to put on. F.Y.I. the time for hand enameling of the embossing varies depending on how much embossing there is. Roughly 3 or more hrs. Wish there was a simpler way that takes less time and looks as good but I haven't discovered it. The painted on string no.s are made as small as possible and are very unobtrusive. Use a small, fine artist brush and if you goof just wipe up with mineral spirits(paint thinner) and start over. I can imagine this will sound odd to some but the tiny little hand painted no.s look very classy under the strings. It lends itself nicely to the "custom handcrafted restoration" image I'm fond of.
