By just drilling a small pilot hole right next to the broken piece, Ron, it
can be worked out quite easily without having to be concerned for
supporting the rail.

Then follow with some dowel concept.  Myself, I chose inserting a dowel
just under the size of the actual hole in the brass rail, rather than 1/8".
