Hi Brian! I am no Bechstein expert, but I own a 1900 Bechstein 6' 0" grand. It has a sloping exposed pinblock, a 3 part case rim (rather than continuous curve), but it has a modern Langer (sp?) action. I agree with you that if it has a real primitive action, it may be older. You mention hammer butt. Does the action not have repetition levers? You could also email Bechstein in Berlin. Someone there could likely date a particular action feature pretty quick. Good luck!
