Aural?

Thanks all, for the responses.

The point of my original question was to emphasize that no matter how many
different tools we use, our ears are the definitive answer. ETDs are superb
tools that many of us use for assistance; they are just not the final
answer. In most cases, especially on good pianos, ETDs will generate a
tuning that often requires very little, if any, adjustments. But, sometimes
that mathematically generated tuning requires much tweaking. Only the ear
tells us when. That's why I believe that all tuning is aural and that ETDs
are great tools with which to tune.

Total aural tunings, at least for myself, are much more tiring on what
little gray matter I have left floating between these sometimes very tired
ears. I am extremely grateful that I have the assistance of my SAT,
especially on the last one after a loooooooooooong day of tuning.

And Richard, the question was "how _can_ one tune, except aurally?" not "how
_do_ we tune?" Think about it.... :-)

I'll now ride off into the sunset.... :-)

Gina
