Roger;
 No Methanol and Mineral spirits (aka "white spirits or solvent") are 
completelty different compounds. Methanol is a distillation of wood 
by-products, i.e. cellulose/glucose/ carbohydrate,etc.  Whereas Mineral 
Spirits is a petroleum distillate.. I would never recommend that Mineral 
spirits be allowed anywhere near hammers :-)
