Dear Bob, I'm not an expert on this problem, but given your locality I believe it is advisable that you are extremely diligent in protecting your health -- Hanta virus is no joke! On the other hand, it is extremely rare up here in the Northeast, and a customer who is a nurse acted like I was seriously paranoid when I expressed some reluctance to dive into her old console which appeared to have served as home to several rodents.
