Hi Don, That crack could go all the way through the case and it is not a simple fix. If it is only veneer deep then Bondo and lacquer will fix it but if it does go all the way through then the rim from the bottom to hold dowels driven into the holes, the case glued and clamped. I would take a feeler gauge and see how deep the crack goes. I know of cases where it has gone all the way through just above the inner rim. There are no cross laminations in a bent rim to give mechanical integrity to the rim. Check it over carefully and show the lady what is involved. This could have happened on a truck if it was uncrated for a great distance and not properly supported on a skid board. Salespeople will hype themselves out of responsibility if they can. This situation will not effect the instruments musical integrity but who wants a broken rim on a new piano? Love to the family. Newton
