Terry,
Right track! Use some black aniline dye stain ( assuming they are ebony) and 
follow with Watco or other real danish oil finish. I have good results 
applying with a "Q" tip. Let it dry a bit and follow with another coat. Let 
dry o'nite and repeat. Do this as many times as you think appropriate. When 
you have it where you like you can either leave it or knock down the sheen 
with 4/0 wool if you so desire.
