I'm thinking that I can disconnect it, securing it above somewhere out of the way (because I probably won't be able to slide it in after dampers are in the way), then lower it back into position after I'm done. The Chickerings I've done had the wire threaded into the heads as well making it easier to swing the head in any direction.
