Richard, quite often I do just fill with finish coats. I use Enduro Poly, it sands easily and fills very quickly. I have used their spreadable filler, but find it hard to get back to flat without cutting into previously stained, raw wood. I suppose could put on a couple of coats of finish, then fill , then sand. You can use steel wool only after the final coats have been applied with this stuff. If you recoat and don't sand _ALL_ the steel particles off, you will get little orange specks from the rust. Guess I'll have to try their wetting agent. Sounds like a time saver.
