Pat, the only way I know of now would be to take them to a video editing
service and have them converted first to digital.  I don't know whether
these shops now have DVD burners or not.  If not, you could probably take
their digital output and feed it into a PC (perhaps through an IEEE 1394
Firewire card), then write it onto a DVD using a DVD-RAM or DVD-RW drive.
Only problem is that the current generations of these have compatibility
issues with existing DVD players.  These problems should be ironed out
during the coming year.  Probably in a couple years this will be commonplace
technology, at least for PCs if not for boxes you use with your TV.

I would just be leery of investing in a new VCR at this point -- especially
an expensive one -- since it's pretty certain this technology is becoming
obsolete.
