plugging key holes

Any reasons aside from appearance should the grain run
in the same direction?

One of my helpers suggested that it would be stronger to run
the plug cross-grain. I can see the reasoning. But I pointed out
that I wanted the expansion rate to be the same. I used plugs
made from old keys, too valuable for kindling. I also cut long,
quarter inch plugs to plug the capstan holes when moving them
is deemed rewhateverable.

But we aligned with the grain anyway.
