Any reasons aside from appearance should the grain run in the same direction? One of my helpers suggested that it would be stronger to run the plug cross-grain. I can see the reasoning. But I pointed out that I wanted the expansion rate to be the same. I used plugs made from old keys, too valuable for kindling. I also cut long, quarter inch plugs to plug the capstan holes when moving them is deemed rewhateverable. But we aligned with the grain anyway.
