Another strong recommendation:  TOSHIBA  I paid about $370 for one almost 10 
years ago and it's still going...good and strong...with many very nice 
features that still most VCRs today don't include for the price you pay.

If you're buying one, I can recommend Mitsubishi. Mine has been good,
lasted well, and is easy to use.
