Michael, Usually the squares have the number stamped into the wood somewhere on the soundboard, Clean it up, and hold a flashlight from the side and you may read the 'shadows'. Most of these were made between 1850 and 1875. Then they fell out of vogue. I have an 1852 Chickering here that I've restrung. At its best its still a disappointment. Roger Hayden
