I've seen these a number of times in old uprights. I have a 1901 S&S upright
in my shop with a ceramic fixture mounted on the bottom of the keybed. My
wife has told me her upright (located in basement) when she was a kid had a
light bulb down below. Clearly an unregulated pre-Damp-Chaser. But a great
night light - and at least you knew when it was on!  :-)
