Larger Tuning Pin Installation

For the first time, I am replacing a few loose pins on a Stroud baby grand 
(1952) in the bass with the next size larger pin and I have 2 questions.

1) Do I need to prepare or modify the existing hole in any way? I started to 
pound in the pin and it seems extremely tight.

2) When supporting the pinblock, how much up-pressure do I exhert on the 
block? (Snug, tighter than snug, etc.)
