By backing off the tension on one of the tuning pins, Clyde, the reference
will become crystal clear.

There is no wood pinblock and no threads on the tuning pin.  The tuning pin
is shorter than normal, flat on one end and manages to hold itself in tune
by "fastening/wedging" itself in its metal holding socket once tension is
established on the string attached to it.
