I'm not Barrie, either, but I think a "knacker" is the
butcher in a slaughterhouse, specializing in worn-out
horses. Slaughterhouse = knacker's yard. That's why
some of the British TV has characters wandering in with
bleared eyes and wrinkled clothes and saying they are
knackered. They used to be offered a cup of tea, but
that seems to be dying out.
