Dear Brian and List, In reading your post, one phrase stuck out as I read. Your description of having "some" success in your aural tunings may just as well indicate that you may have "some" success with ETD's and not "complete or "satisfactory" success! Your limitations may lie in the fact that you may well be hearing everything that it takes to be successful in aural tuning, but may lack the finesse required to keep the strings and/or tuning pins in position or "set" when you have them where you want them pitch wise. If so, this same problem will become even more evident with the use of the new breed of ETD's as they will help to define your errors in stability MUCH MORE CLEARLY! Also, please consider this; If you don't get the aural thing down solid, what will you do when and if your ETD takes a turn for the worse and you have to do without if for some extended period of time?? The time spent honing up your aural abilities will more than pay for the effort spent! Also you may e-mail some of the "regular" contributors on this list directly and ask them how often they have to "disagree" with the ETD's readings as their ears tell them otherwise in certain situations. Best of luck from an Aural/ETD technician! Regards, Dale Whitehead, RPT Franklin Piano Restorations
