  Del,=20
Fine Woodworking did a small feature on pattern-makers, citing them as =
a highly developed combination of woodworking and sculpture, using =
either sugar pine or mahogany for materials. I take it that this would =
be the case for piano plates as well so things haven't changed much =
since Wolfenden's time.=20

  No, not much.

How does this translate to the prices you cited - designers' fees =
added to pattern-makers' fees, plus testing the forms in sand,=20

You would have to ask the foundry about how the prices break down. =
Designers' fee would not be included. They would expect you to show up =
with a complete design, including full size shrink drawings -- at the =
least -- including full cross-sections, drilling details -- these days, =
that means x-y coordinates -- and any other information about the design =
that they may require.

and would it be possible to con Kelley or another foundry into letting =
someone do this by themselves with some guidance just for 1-3 plates?=20

Sure, for $10,000 to $30,000, plus the set-up costs. Which would =
probably run you about as much as the full order would anyway.
