> I'm going w/ 4/0 pins in the 20 yr old replaced Falconwood block.

Check the fit of a 0/3 first. If the originals were 0/2 a 0/4 may
well be too tight for fun.

> What effect would something like threaded supports instead of dowels have on the tone?

Should have none. The threaded support system is a mechanically
superior system (dowels can crush or move) and it is easy to set plate
height.

> I trust the present hitch pins are drilled 90 degrees_then_ bent.

Faster, cheaper, more accurate, easier way to do it.

> Are tension pins (available from your local hardware) what Baldwin uses? They look like it.

Rolled or drift pins are the same, spring steel. It would be far less
expensive to get the amount needed at a machinist's supply house.

> I would have all those nice brass aliquots.

And lots of noisy waste ends.

Have a fun time.
