IMVHO there is _NO_ lubricant which has a strong odor that is safe to use
on strings.  This would _EXPECIALLY_ rule out petroleum or silicone based
ones!!!!! The only one which I might use, and rarely/sparingly at that,
would be Protek CLP.

As someone else suggested, a slightly different hammer technique might cure
the perceived problem.
