Greetings all,
Historical tuning warning!!! The following topic has been known to
raise heart-rates, voices, passions, stupidity, callousness, tender
sensitivites, and all sorts of other emotional stakes, so if it seems like a
dangerous direction, best get off right now.
For the rest, I would hope this is a fascinating and delightful bit of
information.
Went to the Nashville PTG meeting last night and heard Bob Bussell RPT
demo the latest tuning program from Dean Reyburn. In discussion, he
mentioned that he had been playing with a function of the program that
allowed him to merge two tunings together, and he had combined ET with
various historical tunings, resulting in some, (at least to me!), very
interesting looking tunings.
Of particular interest was the result that came from taking a well
temperament,(Prinz) and averaging it with an ET. I suggested that he do
this, and then compare it with the image of the Moore & Co. Victorian. (I
was just mentally tossing the third's averages around, but the O cents of the
C-E third in the Kirnberger averaged with the 13.8 cents of the ET would give
me a near 7 cent third for the new temperament, which is moving into
Victorian era size)
The result of averaging the Kirnberger and ET very closely resembled the
Victorian temperament! This is not totally unexpected, but the ability to
create tunings with a selected degree of tonal color is something that I wish
a few of you RCT users out there would investigate. I think Bob is onto
something here and would be interested in any new experiences the RCT world
wants to tell us about.
Regards,
Ed Foote
