Mason screw stringer

I just bought a 1894 Mason & Hamlin with the screw stringer tuning system. I
have always wanted one... just for kicks. This one has a bad bass bridge. My
question isn't about how to repair the bridge... been there, done that... It
is about letting the tension down on the bass strings. Will there be any
problems to look out for? Can I twist them for better tone like normal?
Anything special I need to know? I have tuned one at Bill Garlicks home and
know the scoop on tuning up vs. tuning down to the pitch.

If you feel you can help me, then send me some info.

Thanks,

Ed Tomlinson
