I will be demonstrating the use of this tool at one of my classes at the CA state convention this week, the Central West regional in March, the Pacific Northwest in April, the Florida state in May, and in Providence. The method is no different than other string "leveling" procedures. The ultimate method is used by some of the Kawai concert techs, and I understand at the Fazioli factory as well. This involves a bubble level fitted to a tool that sits on the unison. You place the bubble level on the strings (after leveling the piano, of course!), and pluck the strings, listening for an even buzz against the leveling tool. Hook the low strings up to level them. Stroking the odd high string can work if not carried too far. Most people just file the hammers level very carefully, then block them on the strings, and pull the low strings up to mate with the hammer. Retuning the piano and rechecking multiple times is required for a really fine job.
