floating Grands and Spar varnish

In your post about the floating yamaha , you mentioned the use of Spar
varnish in the pinblock holes.

I have read about this before, but not quite understand it.
What is the purpose of this.
And what is the exactly  is Varnish? The explanation my dictionary gives is
ambiguous.
I understand that it is transparent paint, but is that specific enough?
Can polyurethane be used?
