"Hammer Technique"

Hi, Ken

We posted each other a while back about the smooth pull technique and I
said that I would give it a try. You might remember that I was dubious
about it, having formed an opinion early on that it didn't work for me.

Since then, I've made some observations about what I do in different
situations and noticed that when I tune grand pianos, quite often I will
give a steady push (or pull) and on top of that steady effort I will add
little impulses, just enough to cause some pin movement. So, it's a
mixture of jerk and smooth pull, if you will. I first push the string
toward flat, then pull it toward sharp - to get a feel of the pin in the
block . With this knowledge, I now know in which direction to move the
pin and procede with the pull and jerk technique (push and jerk if going
flat).

I won't say that I invented it. Maybe I just downloaded it from the
psychic internet. Is this anything like what you do?
