Hi Ed:

The extra half inch shouldn't make that much difference to the overall
tone. I would suspect something else. It was very common in the early
days to have around 3/4 inch unwrapped length. A shorter unwrapped
length would lower the inharmonicity a little, but it seems like there
must be something else robbing the tone.
