The "contrary" : ) voicing method uses a single needle just under the grooves. Looks like you are drawing blood. The felt must not be ripped. The idea is to unpack the compacted felt. Kind of like fluffing a pillow but it is difficult to describe. The size needle depends on how the felt reacts. The shorter the grooves the better this works. If there are multiple grooves from the shift being out of adjustment or the player not depressing the pedal fully, this method becomes tedious. Some times the felt is too brittle for this method to work. Hmm... maybe fabric softener here..?
