Ted,
A square-shaped steel core wire?  =:o  Come on over to Texas for a
visit.  We'll spin up a few sample strings on our spinning machine. 
It's fun.  You'll see what needs to be done to make bass strings
better.  There ARE different kinds of copper and different kinds of core
wire.  Really, come on over.
