A late response, but I thought that I'd let you know that, as a pianist who has followed the pianotech list for several months, the periodic discussions about humidity control convinced me to ask that a Dampp-Chaser system be installed in my newly-rebuilt 1899 Steinway 'B' (done by Jim Reeder, out of Lansing, MI). The soundboard is the physical core of the piano; if you let that go, then there is a significant amount of work to get to it, and you either have to or might as well regild/refinish the plate, restring, get new pins (or a new pinblock)... So why mess around? The system I got was about another 1% of the piano's purchase price, which is a wonderfully small investment to save the 100% that was the point of the sale. Steven J.
