Parafin Blues

Regarding the parafin:

I was led to believe that part of the problem was the chemical reaction
between the parafin and the nickle coating of the center pin. That is what
creates the green gunk. In otherwords, you can repin, and you can put all
sorts of chemicals on the felt, to ease the center and make it work, but in
the long run, unless you replace the parafin soaked cloth, the same problem
will come back.

Is there any truth to this, or did I hear wrong?
