Try hooking the string to a hitch pin and pull it tight and use a finger nail
to pluck the string near the terminal point.  Get your ear close to the string.
If the string is dead you will not hear any of the higher partials.  If it is
good you will hear those partials.  This string has to be TIGHT; use vise
grips, your body weight and your ears.
