But I thought the issue here was whether to releather worn checks, or
replace the whole piece. We presume that in either case the end result will

Perhaps I misunderstand. What specifically do you take issue with?  Are you
suggesting that you have had problems with the new backchecks?  This is a
minor alteration compared to some other discussions on this list.
