Avery: You are correct about Steinway's design-it is supposed to pinch the pin down slightly.There is often a piece of fiberboard on the front edge of the cheek block which can be partially or completely removed if the piano is knocking. If that isn't enough,remove the plate, use a piece of veneer as a shim to lower the plate, plug and redrill for screws. I have done this once or twice on D's-but be sure the studs are all set correctly first. They change a lot on some concert instruments-and a Hamburg might be more susceptible to this.
