Jeff, I'm not sure which issue of the Journal has the topic you inquired about,but, you are on the right track re dealing with this problem. Yes, let down the tension. Yes, pull the separation together with clamps, then secure by drilling out the plate lag bolt holes through the back and countersink for the appropriate size nut and washers. Tightbond glue is fine.
