Restringers, I recently ran across some information that I picked up in a class in Albuquerque on restringing. The class was taught by Greg Hulme and included a chart on locating aliquots on Steinway pianos. He received this information from someone at Steinway many years ago. (BTW, for anyone who isn't familiar with the process, they use a metal template in the factory for positioning.) I haven't used the figures or experimented with them in any way, but I'm just passing them along in hopes that they might be of use to someone. The original patent calls for the length of the duplex section to be a specific fraction of the speaking length. If the aliquots are in the position originally set by the factory, I certainly wouldn't change the dimensions without a good reason. For positioning, two indexing holes drilled through the bar and the plate before unstringing wil allow easy repositioning upon reassembly. The instructions are reproduced as follows: Dimensions at notes indicated are along line of string from rear line of rear bridge pins to bearing line of Duplex Scale. Style S Note# 43 = 5-3/32" Note# 54 = 3-3/32" Note# 55 = 2-13/16" Note# 71 = 1-21/32" Note# 72 = 1-15/32" Note# 88 = 15/16" Style L Note# 44 = 4-31/32" Note# 54 = 3-3/32" Note# 55 = 2-13/16" Note# 71 = 1-21/32" Note# 72 = 1-15/32" Note# 88 = 15/16" Style M Note# 42 = 4-1/4" Note# 54 = 3-1/32" Note# 55 = 2-13/16" Note# 71 = 1-21/32" Note# 72 = 1-15/32" Note# 88 = 15/16" Style B Note# 40 = 3-27/32" Note# 51 = 1-13/16" Note# 52 = 3-11/32" Note# 68 = 1-15/32" Note# 69 = 1-13/16" Note# 88 = 31/32" Style D Note# 37 = 7-5/8" Note# 53 = 3-7/32" Note# 54 = 3-1/16" Note# 71 = 2-9/16" Note# 72 = 3-1/4" Note# 88 = 1-31/32" Allan Gilreath Gilreath Piano & Organ Co.
