Coiled vs. straight... let's see.

We all know that piano wire retains it's spool curl even after being in a piano
for years.

The core wire would certainly have this characteristic, but the windings
are applied while the string is taut and straight in the winding machine.
Strings which are not coiled after winding will exhibit less tendency to curl
and therefore should be less suspect to false beats/ loose windings which
can occur after the *winding* has taken a 'set' from being tightly coiled.
