That sounds pretty good, Alan, but "slight eye irratation" was also an "out" for me. My eyes just plain hurt after using this hanging a whole set! I had a vent and goggles, the whole thing. I don't know what this stuff is, nor do I want to. It stinks, it's nasty too fast a set up time; and If there are other glues that will work with these parts, I'm all for it!
I really do like the WNG parts; don't get me wrong on this! I think we're entering the 21st century with some good ideas.

I'll hold off a bit and see how this stuff evolves!

Paul

Hi Paul,

This set was my first using the CA gel glue. I actually liked it quite a bit other than the slight eye irritation. The fit of the hammer onto the shank using their bit was perfect without any kind of reaming necessary. When you first slide the hammer on it is really loose and floppy, which affords plenty of time to get it in place. You hold it for a couple seconds and soon it is stable. A short time later it is set. “Burning” these shanks is also much faster and easier than wood shanks and they stay where you put them. The whole process was faster. I also have used the Titebond molding glue and liked it very much. I generally like a loose fit and a glue with a longer set up time so the CA Gel, contrary to what I originally thought, is a good fit for my hanging process.

I went throught the WNG week-long seminar so I had some experience with the stuff. That was a great experience, btw, and you might consider signing up for it. I went to Haverhill, MA so it was held in the M&H factory. Well worth the time.

Alan

Do you like the superglue quick setting glue? I like having a little more time to line up the hammers when hanging. Have they changed it at all? I complained to them about it (this was 2 years ago) I would try more shanks with a better glue. When I hung the set on the M, I had about 10 seconds to get it right, and I don't like that. I also don't like glues that don't set up for several minutes. I've been happy so for with the Tightbond moulding and trim glue. Haven't had any long term problems yet. (knock on my head…)

Re: [CAUT] [pianotech] Gen-u-whine Steinway parts:OT RANT
Yes. There is a lot to like about WNG parts. I am just finishing up a complete action install on a 6 1/2’ Young Chang that had bad brackets. I’m liking working with the parts – capstans, keypins, S&F, Wips, backchecks. I’m not changing out the backaction on this one though. This is my first time using Ronsen Weikert felt. I think it’ll be a winner, even if it is a Young Chang.

I'll second that notion.

Have you considered replacing those heavy, high friction original Steinway capstans with much lighter, slicker, WNG capstans? you want to offer maximum performance or maximum authenticity? I don't think we can have both!
