[CAUT] [pianotech] Gen-u-whine Steinway parts:OT RANT

This weekend (NEECSO in Burlington, VT) Mike Callahan of WNG/M&H gave a class on hanging hammers with WNG parts. When Alan and I were at M&H for the week long class in November, we were in a very high ceiling room, and the glue odor was not noticeable.
Saturday's class was in a small room, and it was a bit irritating. Mike said after one of the factory hammer hangers complained about the CA odor they put fans into the action stations, sucking the CA tainted air away before it could drift up to the lady's eyes.
I'm quite sensitive to the low viscosity CA glue's fumes; I'll be using some of venting others have posted the next time I have to revive a spinet or console.

I don't know what this stuff is, nor do I want to. It stinks, it's nasty too fast a set up time; and If there are other glues that will work with these parts, I'm all for it!

The fit of the hammer onto the shank using their bit was perfect without any kind of reaming necessary. When you first slide the hammer on it is really loose and floppy, which affords plenty of time to get it in place. You hold it for a couple seconds and soon it is stable. A short time later it is set. “Burning” these shanks is also much faster and easier than wood shanks and they stay where you put them. The whole process was faster. I also have used the Titebond molding glue and liked it very much. I generally like a loose fit and a glue with a longer set up time so the CA Gel, contrary to what I originally thought, is a good fit for my hanging process.

I complained to them about it (this was 2 years ago) I would try more shanks with a better glue. When I hung the set on the M, I had about 10 seconds to get it right, and I don't like that. I also don't like glues that don't set up for several minutes. I've been happy so for with the Tightbond moulding and trim glue. Haven't had any long term problems yet. (knock on my head…)

> Yes. There is a lot to like about WNG parts. I am just finishing up a complete action install on a 6 1/2’ Young Chang that had bad brackets. I’m liking working with the parts – capstans, keypins, S&F, Wips, backchecks. I’m not changing out the backaction on this one though. This is my first time using Ronsen Weikert felt. I think it’ll be a winner, even if it is a Young Chang.
