[CAUT] Fwd: S&S M Strike point

Hi Ron,

For this action, I am replacing the rails and brackets with WN&G parts.  This process includes replacing the cleats for the brackets on the key frame.  Once this is done, I  will use the same shank length (basically)  but this alone does not position the lower end of the action precisely at the best strike point ( or at the manufacturer's spec).   The new brackets and their position on top of the new cleats has to be determined.  A WN&G treble strike gauge can determine the strike points for 88 and one lower note in the upper treble.  For note no. 1, a strike point spec is needed.  I can just use the current strike point that the old action and hammer #1 is indicating, but would prefer to have the exact point.  This would not have changed with the belly work that you did.   I will contact Steinway and see if they will supply that information.
Once I have that strike point spec, then I have a process for positioning the brackets on the cleats to assure that the action is at the in/out position.
Thanks to all who have commented on this!
Bob Hull

Hi Bob,
Sorry, I don't have that number, but what JD outlined is just what you need to make it fit and work. Even if the action has been rebuilt before, the stack should still be in the original position and should be able to provide measurements to the hammer flange centers at both ends both in height and fore and aft as a target for the replacement. Or if you can verify the shank length is to spec, you can mark and measure the strike point accurately from the old stack. If this is the piano in which I did the belly for you this spring, treble string heights are now considerably more uniform than they were when it was built, so that ought to at least simplify setup and hammer boring some.
