[CAUT] Degree?

Hi, Jim --

So many things to consider. Do you like figuring out how things work by seeing that the underlying math makes sense? Engineering, physics, business, economics. Do you like seeing the vagaries of human nature? History, with its many possible specific areas and periods. Do you like thinking about how things ought to be (rather than how they actually are)? Philosophy, religion, ethics. Do you like objects and colors and structures? Fine arts, architecture, textile history. I guess my question begins with asking, what do you like wondering about?, and going on from there.

My personal experience (and you know that I am a great one for going to school) is that I have completed the degrees in fields where the courses seemed exciting and interesting and didn't complete the degrees in fields that I "really thought that I should study." Particularly in adulthood, I like spending my time in ways that make me happy.

And, for a last thought, I was just reading some material for my nursing continuing-ed credits, and came across this gem which I am pondering: people in high-stress occupations (?us, maybe) have the most fulfilling lives when they have outside interests which require focus on something other than their occupation. This is why I find myself reading Revolutionary War military histories every Sunday morning, as both a delight and a mental discipline. (I particularly enjoy the ones with good maps.) What would catch your attention and require your focus?

Best wishes from Boston --
Dorrie Bell

Subject: [CAUT] Degree?

All,

One of the benefits here at BYU is “free” classes for me and for my spouse. Besides taking Basket Weaving 101, Tennis, and other classes for personal enrichment, I was thinking that another degree might be a worthy goal. BYU actually encourages this. Do any of you have this benefit? Any thoughts? Degree possibilities? (Career change not being an option ; > )

Thanks.
