[CAUT] Mitutoyo gauge

Alan,

Good point. No offense taken or intended. I just feel kind of foolish that I don’t even know what a durometer is. <G>

Best,
Jim

Hi Jim,
And I know it’s not meant to be used like I did (compression) and as Alan pointed out.
I only pointed that out in case someone else wanted to be a real boy scout about pursuing the compress-ability thing (and has at least $400.00 in their discretionary spending fund for a durometer--pricey, as Ted pointed out). I did not mean to imply that you were using your dial pressure gauge incorrectly. I think I'll start using mine that way too! Thanks for the tip.

Hi Ted,

It’s very useful. And I know it’s not meant to be used like I did (compression) and as Alan pointed out. But it did help to verify that some punchings were firmer than others, and not just my imagination.

Best,
Jim

I have used the same Mitutoyo gauge for years, and find it indispensable. A Durometer measures hardness, comparable toRockwell testing for metals. Very expensive, unfortunately.

I use similar dial pressure gauges for measuring various compress-able materials (such as action cloth and cardboard), but to get a consistent measurement rather than to get a comparative "compress-ability" measurement. For that, the best tool would probably be a durometer.

John P,

Here is a pic of the gauge I use for thickness. (It’s not zeroed out.)
